For veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, it has not been an easy task to bring to the silver screen a story from the land of his roots while completely remaining unbiased. His latest film “Shikara: The Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits” is set against the backdrop of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus from the Kashmir Valley in late 1989 and early 1990, in the wake of violent Islamist insurgency.

“I have done much work in all these years but this was perhaps my most challenging as I had to remain dispassionate as a moviemaker to depict the truth, and yet make a compelling argument that the only solution to such hatred is love That is at the centre of my movie. The love between Shiv Kumar Dhar and Shanti (the protagonists), Shanti is also my mother’s name by the way, is a binding factor which forces us to think beyond hatred,” said Chopra.

When quizzed what took so long to make the film since it’s been 30 years since he left Kashmir, the filmmaker replied: “I started work on this post my mother’s demise in 2007. The Kashmiri Pandit exodus is a known issue but the complexities and the build-up of events that led to the driving away of the Kashmiri Pandits is not known. This movie required significant research so that we could tell an absorbing story which is fact-based and helps in bringing this conversation to the fore.”

“The shoot was mostly in Kashmir, which was under heavy security cover so we had limited time to get work done. Authenticity was the key,” he added.

The filmmaker also explained how difficult was the process of writing the story for the big screen for the movie which marks his comeback to the direction in Bollywood after 13 years.

“The writing also took significant time as I had to sift through tons of documentation and video footage to bring reality to celluloid. This movie was difficult to write. I worked with Abhijat Joshi and Rahul Pandita for several years before I could bring it to life.”

Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Vidhu Vinod Chopra wants peace to return to the valley, just as it was in his growing up years. Given a chance, would he feel safe to resettle there?

“Unequivocally yes. For me, it is more important than peace, love and affection returns to the valley. Those bonds which existed between communities are reconnected and we live happily forever,” said Chopra.

He also commented on the current scenario of the Valley. “I go there every year. The land is still as beautiful as it was, but demographically it has changed because a lot of Pandits have left. So it’s not the same. It’s become slightly desolate, and that hits you sometimes. I hope and pray that someday it goes back to how it was.”

The filmmaker urges youngsters specifically to watch the movie because he feels they should learn about the valley’s tense history, how Kashmir became what it is today.

“It is an extremely important part of history which has not been spoken about and documented well enough for people to know. There is a great saying ‘If you don’t know history, you are condemned to repeat it’. I urge the youth to go and see this movie to learn about the Pandit exodus and see how love can conquer all hate,” he said, adding, “For me, this is not just a movie. It is a movement of sorts, to make the entire nation realise the trauma this community experienced and the sheer helplessness with which they have been packed off in various refugee camps across the country.”

“Shikara: The Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits” marks the Bollywood debut of actors Aadil Khan and Sadia who essay the lead roles. The film is scheduled to release on February 7.

Revolving around the life of four pretty-much grey characters, the story involves a whole lot of revenge burdened with innumerable unintentionally funny ‘drug warnings’. Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) – a bagpack tripper, Sara (Disha Patani) – in search of her Ikigai away from the Tigers, Michael (Kunal Kemmu) & Agashe (Anil Kapoor) – two shady officers cross each other’s path in Goa.

The story takes place in two timelines, one indicates the purpose of revenge & other designs the execution. We see Advait from a normal person escaping the routine life finding himself in Goa to someone filled with a vengeance on a killing spree. Now, what’s the purpose behind the same is what the story is all about.

Malang Movie Review: Script Analysis

This is by far Mohit Suri’s darkest attempt at establishing emotions laced with just the proper amount of thrills. Explaining it in two different timelines, it does a comforting job to register what’s what. Script speeds up things which majorly works in the favour of the film. Aseem Arora’s script maintains dual-shade characters for almost every actor & it is backed by exuberant performances.

My complaint with the script was its convenience. A lot of things happening look easy to believe & that weakens the bond you build with the characters. There are good twists but the convenience fades impact at some places. Also, Mohit had the first chance to show a ‘proper’ drug-trip (Rajkumar Hirani tried a mushy version of it in Sanju) but he fails to do so. There’s not a single time when he just takes you in Disha or Aditya’s head to feel the trip.

Malang Movie Review: Star Performance

Aditya Roy Kapur is intoxicating and not in a bad way. He just levels up as far as his acting is concerned and also from alcohol to drugs. I’ve always trusted him when it comes to emotional scenes, but in this one, he just strengthens my trust when it comes to being a badass. His robust physique is not the only thing showcasing the efforts he has put in the film. From subtle stubble to thick-beard, Aditya’s face is a perfect fit for the various beard-styles catalogue.

Disha Patani gets out of the shell and how? She has already got the looks working for her but this one’s special. She gets the scope to act & she does it pretty well. Still, a long way to go but she had to start somewhere.

It’s been years of seeing Anil Kapoor acting and if you think he’s exhausted with the kind of roles he’s choosing, you need to see this one. A druggie police officer who knows no rule – you can’t take anyone but Anil. He justifies the character apart from a few traits which make him ham.

Kunal Kemmu, the lost gem of Bollywood, fulfils mine appetite of wanting him back on screen. He gradually peels off the layers of his character, while exhibiting the depth he has got in his acting. Elli Avrram gets a character that is beautifully designed for her. Apart from her hippie looks, she understands the tonality of her character and never outdoes it.

Malang Movie Review: Direction, Music

Mohit Suri has always been ‘high’ on emotions and music, this time he takes it a notch higher with the thrilling factor. While getting to a point of purpose, he takes too many cinematic liberties which might pinch some. A good thing is, none of those pauses or slows down the narrative. I met a different Mohit this time as he merges his direction with sound-design very smoothly leaving a great impact. The ‘swish’ sound effects with camera movements worked really well for me.

This is the place where the film easily lost a .5 because out of all the songs just the title track clicks. A potentially good song Hum Phir Na Mile Kabhi is wrongly placed fading all the emotional connect I had with it before the film. All the songs are music-heavy but lack good lyrics. Raju Singh’s background score carries the thumping effect to go with the theme.

Malang Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Malang takes you from one ‘thrill’ to another without taking much time. The fast pace doesn’t miss anything important and manages to narrate an intriguing story without making you look at the watch.

Malang Box Office: Aditya Roy Kapur-Disha Patani’s Malang has opened on a decent note at the ticket windows. Considering the positive feedback, the film has a huge potential of putting off an impressive show and today, the early shows are showing some promising signs.

Speaking about today i.e. day 2, Malang has recorded the occupancy of 15-17% in the morning shows across the country, which is an improvement compared to yesterday’s 10-12%. Evening and night shows are showing a decent chunk of seats being already sold, so the film is expected to catch momentum and set the stage for Sunday.

Directed by Mohit Suri, Malang also features Anil Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Amruta Khanvilkar in key roles. It marks reunion of Aditya and Mohit after the blockbuster success of Aashiqui 2.

Meanwhile, talking about the romantic action-thriller, the director revealed: “It’s a story about four different characters from different backgrounds. They have a different interpretation of ‘malang’. The word ‘Malang’ essentially refers to a man who stays by himself, who is not connected to worldly rules, regulations, law and order. He is happy in his own world. A person can be ‘malang’ when he is truly, madly and deeply in love, when he does not care about what happens in the outside world. It also happens when you have lost someone you loved the most and you have nothing to lose, so you don’t fear anything. The loss of fear is also a state of ‘malang’. These characters, who are in different states of ‘malang’, meet one Christmas evening in Goa. The film is about how they all cross paths and what happened five years back on the same day,” reports IANS

A start like this has given a good platform for the film to grow on Saturday and Sunday. The word of mouth will come into play now as the reviews are pretty polarised. On one side, the film is being appreciated for its stylish treatment and on the other end, there is also criticism for the complicated drama that has been spun around.

Nonetheless, it would all boil down to how audiences react to the film from here on. If the collections turn out to be in the range of 9-10 crores today, it would be a good enough growth for the Mohit Suri directed film.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior Box Office: Even on its fifth Friday, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior is collecting at the box office. The Om Raut directed film brought in 1.15 crores more, which is fine because the collections are still over the 1 crore mark and that is remarkable considering it is the 29th day.

That said, there is a drop when compared to 1.85 crores that the film had fetched on Thursday. Given the trend so far where the Ajay Devgn starrer has held so well ever since the release, one expected the numbers to be in the range of 1.25-1.50 crores in fact.

However, Mohit Suri’s Malang starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani has surprised a bit with its collections turning out to be 6.71 crores and that did put some kind of dent on the collections of Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior.

The film now stands at 260.67 crores and with further jumps expected today and tomorrow, the total should read at least 265 crores post the fifth weekend.

Tanhaji Box Office: Ajay Devgn-Saif Ali Khan’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior closed its 4th week run on a record note. It emerged as the 3rd highest earner of week 4 in Bollywood’s history. Interestingly, the numbers are more than the opening week collections of Kangana Ranaut’s Panga and Saif-Alaya F’s Jawaani Jaaneman.

Currently, standing at a total of 260.67 crores, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior bagged an amount of 21.65 crores in week 4. The collections are slightly better than Jawaani Jaaneman’s opening week of 20.21 crores and Panga’s 18.21 crores.

Also, a total of 260.67 crores is much greater than a combined collection of Varun Dhawan-Shraddha Kapoor’s Street Dancer 3D (71.36 crores*), Jawaani Jaaneman (21.25 crores*), Panga (25.64 crores*) and Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak (32.48 crores), which stands at 150.73 crores.

Directed by Om Raut, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior released on 10th January 2020. It also features Kajol, Devdatta Nage, Sharad Kelkar, Luke Kenny and Neha Sharma in key roles.

“Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” chronicles the heroic story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s subedaar Tanaji Malusare who sacrificed his life fighting valiantly against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s army to save the Sinhagad fort. In the film, Ajay Devgn plays the titular role with Saif Ali Khan playing the antagonist Udaybhan Sinh Rathore, and Sharad Kelkar cast as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan is over the moon, as Tanhaji entered the Rs 200 crore club at the box-office. He says that the role will go down as one of his best ever.

He said, “So pleased to be a part of such an inspiring and entertaining film! Thank you Ajay for this great part that will go down as one of my very best! God bless OM Raut, Kumarji, ADF films and the memory of Subedar Tanaji Malusare and Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaaj!,” reports IANS.

Jawaani Jaaneman Box Office: Jawaani Jaaneman somehow managed to hang in there on the second Friday as 1.04 crores came in. Though the collections were stable during the weekdays, they were still on the lower side. Hence there was always a risk that the numbers would see a major fall on the second Friday. Considering that, the dip from Thursday numbers of 1.55 crores to the second Friday of 1.04 crores is still unreasonable.

The film has seen a reduction of screens and Malang, which caters to the same urban multiplex audiences, has arrived as well which gives audiences a lot to pick and choose from. The makers of Jawaani Jaaneman would just be hoping that the collections jump further today and if over 1.50 crores come in, it would be a reasonable growth.

So far, the Saif Ali Khan starrer has collected 21.25 crores and some push in footfalls can take it closer to the 25 crores mark before the second weekend is through. It would allow it to then march on towards a 30 crores lifetime as a best-case scenario.

As per the early trends flowing in, Malang has added another 8-9 crores to its collections yesterday, i.e, its day 2. Which means, the film witnessed a jump of almost 30-35%, which is appreciable! The overall collections will now somewhere stand between 14.71-15.71 crores, and if this pace continues, the film can actually collect bounty in its first weekend.

Filmmaker Mohit Suri is strictly against nepotism and he insists he casts actors on the basis of merit and suitability for a role.

Opening up on why he chose Aditya Roy Kapur as leading man for his upcoming flick Malang, despite the fact that the actor’s last few films have bombed, he told IANS: “Without sounding pompous I’d like to mention that I have never really cast an actor for his commercial viability. As long as he or she fits my role I cast him. I had cast him in ‘Aashqui 2′ before which he had done character roles in a couple of films but not lead role. When I met him I felt he would be the perfect choice for Aashiqui 2. Now for Malang, I felt he is capable of doing this kind of a role where he will grow up from a hippi to a hero. Also, I come from Mahesh Bhatt’s school, we make films based on who is right for the role and not because someone is somebody’s son or daughter.”

Bengaluru

Bengaluru is just about fair with 12-15% shows getting packed at a quick pace. Evening shows remain to be favourite.

Hyderabad

Hyderabad is good and probably the best performing circuit for Malang with around 25% shows filling fast.

Pune, Kolkata and Chennai

Pune is below average but still better than yesterday. As of now, around 5-7% shows are full to almost full in advance ticket sale.

Kolkata is dull with just a few shows filling at a quick pace.

Chennai is impressive with around 35% shows filling fast.

Malang Box Office: Right from its ensemble cast of Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu, to earworm music, Malang managed to create a decent awareness about its release. Going by the reports of today, it seems like the film is attracting its targeted audience quite impressively.

As per the reports flowing in, Malang has recorded the occupancy of 16-18% for morning shows. It’s not a huge growth but a steady trend when compared to yesterday’s 15-17% and the stage is set to pick up from here on. Also, in advance booking report, we have seen that the film is good in the evening and night shows.

Meanwhile, in order to fit into his role in Malang, actor Aditya Roy Kapur needed to transform his physical appearance. In the trailer and promos of the film, he can be seen flaunting his muscular body, and Aditya says it was not easy for him to bring about the changes in his body.

“(Director) Mohit Suri and I were clear that there will be two different looks, and the character had to go through both mental and physical transformation. Changing physicality actually started changing my state of mind as well, and helped me find the character. All the people I consulted told me that when you’re building muscles, you need eight to 12 weeks completely off everything else when you are training. We started the shoot with the younger portion (of the character), which required me to be lean. I psyched myself to hit the gym even though we were shooting for 12 to 14 hours,” Aditya told IANS.

Malang Box Office: did well on Saturday as 8.89 crores came in. Ideally, a double digit score would have allowed the film an even healthier weekend. However, Delhi theatres opened only in the evening due to elections and that did hurt the overall collections a bit.

A growth from 6.71 crores on Friday to now 8.89 crores on Saturday is a good enough indication that the target audience, youth, has been accepting of the film. The numbers so far are exceeding expectations and if a similar jump is seen on Sunday as well then Bollywood could well have a surprise success this season.

So far, the Mohit Suri directed film has collected 15.60 crores and while 25 crores would be comfortably surpassed, it has to be seen how much closer to the 30 crores mark does Malang find itself before the weekend is through. The film is collecting more than the combined numbers of all other films in the running (Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Shikara, Jawaani Jaaneman) and that would indeed be pleasing Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani and Kunal Kemmu.

Jawaani Jaaneman Box Office: It is continuing to stay in hunt for the 30 crores lifetime. The film had collected 1.04 crores on Friday and later on Saturday it jumped around 50% to bring in 1.58 crores. This has brought the overall collections to 22.83 crores and further jump today will bring it closer to the 25 crores mark.

In fact the film had been doing its best business in Delhi and there the collections were impacted due to elections. Otherwise the jump would have been even bigger and collections would have been closer to the 1.75 crores mark.

That said, it has also been seen that Tanhaji : The Unsung Warrior, which is in its fifth week, grew by almost 150% from Friday to Saturday, and hence potential was there. Had it been a 100% growth then the overall outcome would have been even better. Still, the fact that the film has managed to cover at least this distance is fair enough and is allowing it to be theatrically a coverage affair.

For the unversed, Malang has added total collections of 15.60 crores till its Day 2. The film was expected to witness a further jump the following day, but it looks like the multiple releases starting from Shikara, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Jawaani Jaaneman gave it a tough competition as the film could only manage to witness around a 10-15% jump.

As per the early trends flowing in, Malang has added numbers in the range of 8.5-9.5 crores, which remains below expectations. This now will bring its overall collections to 24.1-25.1 crores.

Directed by Mohit Suri, Malang also features Anil Kapoor, Elii AvRam, Amruta Khanvilkar and Kunal Kemmu.

There was competition from Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior as well as Street Dancer 3D when the film released and currently there are footfalls being diverted to Malang as well. In the midst of this all, Jawaani Jaaneman has managed respectable numbers and would eventually turn out to be a coverage affair.

John Abraham, who was last seen on the silver screen in Pagalpanti, has an interesting line up of films in the making. From a sequel to Satyamev Jayate and Ek Villain to Mumbai Saga and Attack in the pipeline, John is certainly creating headlines with his return as the action hero of the year.

However, John is quick to refute the possibilities of all the films being solely action entertainers. While he agrees that Attack is an all-out actioner, John points out that Mumbai Saga is a true story on the life of gangster Amar Naik and Satyamev Jayate 2 tackling social causes too.

The actor was also quizzed about reports doing rounds of him playing a triple role in Satyamev Jayate 2. To this, John has been quoted by Mumbai Mirror saying, “I hope that’s true, but Milap (Zaveri, writer-director) is still in the process of developing certain characters and he might like me to play other roles too. However touting Attack as a different film from the rest of his movies, John says he is not sure if the audiences will enjoy the movie or not. But having said that, the actor is also not scared of taking the risk. “I’m walking on eggshells with Attack, asking myself if the audience will accept it, but backing my debutant director, Lakshya Raj Anand all the way. It’s a risk, but I believe people are tired of the regular action films and I want to effect a change. I’m not afraid of failure. You are insecure only if you feel the pressure to succeed.”

John also has Gorkha with director Nikkhil Advani and Ray with Abhishek Sharma in the making. Directed by Anees Bazmee, Pagalpanti featuring John Abraham alongside Anil Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Pulkit Samrat and Ileana D’cruz was a box office dud and faced a lot of backlash.

Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming directorial Thappad‘s trailer released recently and has created an immense uproar among the audience and this is going to be the director’s hattrick after delivering projects like Mulk and Article 15 which were both loved by the audiences and critics alike. Thappad is being hailed as this year’s PINK and is already being proclaimed as a blockbuster hit by the audiences and critics alike. The poster of Thappad in itself had created noise for all the right reasons. The trailer of the film was hailed as hard-hitting and gut-wrenching, at the same time.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior Box Office: After collecting 1.15 crores on Friday, Tanhaji has maintained very good hold on Monday as well with 0.88 crores coming in. The film is just not slowing down even in its fifth week and around 2.50 crores more will come in before the close of week.

This is the first time ever though that the collections have gone below the 1 crore mark and that has happened on the 32nd day, which is remarkable. The biggest of the films lose steam after 20 days and stop collecting in the 1 crore range and here the Om Raut directed period war drama has stayed superb for way longer than that.

So far, the Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan starrer has collected 267.76 crores and if the pace continues like this, 270 crores milestone would be crossed before the film enters the sixth week.
