There was a time when the total silsila of ‘Mere Karan Arjun wapas aayenge’ and ‘Bade bade desho mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai’ made ripples down the dialogues chart. But today, all of it is so passé! Whilst these one liners gave way to punch lines and the more Dabangg-ish corny liners, we bring you the best that 2013 had to offer.
So much for the sake of dialoguebaazi, you see!
Aashiqui 2, Chennai Express and Ramleela Movie Poster
Chennai Express
This Rohit Shetty comedy had everything: from funny one liner to punchers and some spoofs as well. Chennai Express was just not high on the entertainment segment but it definitely was top notch when it came to dhasu muhtoor dialoguebaazi! From our Shah Rukh Khan screaming, “Don’t underestimate the power of a common man” to reminiscing us of his earlier Rahul escapades, there was everything working for the film. But our favourite would definitely be the sequence where SRK chuckles, “Mere dictionary mein impossible ka shabd nahi hai” and our sweetly docile Meenamma replies with a shrug, “Kaha se kharidi aisi bokwaas dictionary?”
Race 2
This conniving and hugely manipulative mystery thriller started the year with a bang! Rightly so, the Abbas-Mustan duo created ripples on screen as they provided each of their characters with ample lines, most of which thundered with attitude. For example, when Saif goes on to say, “Race hamesha meri thi aur meri hi rahegi, kyunki main is race ka sabse purana khiladi hoon”, the audience roared with their share of ceetees and the taalis!
Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns
Bold and gutsy, this film dealt with the intricate nuances of relationship, betrayal and warfare. Knowing its theme and its predecessor’s smashing impact, it was a given that Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns will be loaded with even more bombastic dialogues. And so it did. Be it ‘Tumein dekhkar badtameezi karne ko kyun jee karta hai’ taking us through the naughty ride or the enchanting Mahie Gill liner, “Yeh hamesha mard hi kyun milte hain humein … shayar kyun nahi milte?”, the film had its characters do all the talking as we gaped attentively. After all, inki toh gaali pe bhi taali parti hai! Right?
Shootout At Wadala
History has it that most Balaji films especially the gangster flicks that they have ceremoniously produced throughout the years have had that added dush of luminous dialogues in full pomp and fervor. And Shootout at Wadala was no different! Tracing the life of Manya Surve, who once ruled the Mumbai arena, Shootout at Wadala saw an insurmountable amount of punchlines and catchphrases doing the rounds. Its when John aka Manya declares, “Shareer mein 206 haddiyan hai, aur samvidhan mein 1670 kanoon … haddi se lekar kanoon sab todta hoon”, the crowd clamoured in utmost joy and roar. But he did save the best for someone else. It was when jhakaas Anil Kapoor made a staggering entry with, “Meri bandook se nikli har goli pehle mujhe salaam thokti hai … aur phir mere nishaane ko” that made all the more noise!
Raanjhanaa
This had the total desi rustic charm attached to the lines, there was a fluffly nonchalance in everything that was muttered. And the leads ensured that even the simplest dialogues got uplifted with their invigorating attitude and pomp. Dhanush clearly had the best lines in the film where he as Kundan casted a magic spell on the audiences. Beautifully penned lines like “Namaaz mein woh thi, par aisa laga ki dua hamari qabool ho gayi” brought in a certain amount of subtlety to the romance whereas lines like, “Tumhara pyaar na ho gaya, UPSC ka exam ho gaya. 10 saal se paas hi nai ho raha” tugged at our comic bones!
Shuddh Desi Romance
A brave testament to the modern age couples that the nation isn’t so proudly accepting of, Shuddh Desi Romance was an acceptance ode to everything that’s considered taboo in India: smoking, live in relationships and pre-marital sex! And when it was left to Sushant Singh and Parineeti Chopra (especially!) to do the corny ones with aplomb, they just fired it all up and how. Naughty, goofy and eclectic, the dialogues resonated the core of the flick and we simply lost our hearts to them. Especially when Rishi Kapoor exclaimed, “Tujhe iska character certificate kyu chahiye…passport reject karwana hai kya iska.”
Ramleela
Deepika Padukone might have been the best thing about this spectacularly framed film but it was Ranveer Singh who mouthed the spiciest lines with ease and comfort. He had that spunk, that manly machismo he needed to flaunt along with his chiseled body when he went on to say, “Hero ban ne ke liye jigar ki zaroorat hai bhai” But the high point of their sizzling chemistry oozed out when Deepika exclamied, “Jigar pe mat ja, Trigger daaba dungi” and Ranveer retorted, “Toh daba na!” Total oo-la la moment for me! Probably the best dialogues from the 2013 lot, Ram Leela was high on oomph, attitude and power. True that!
Boss
When you have Khiladi Kumar taking the reins, you better be assured of lip smacking corny one liners that will blow your minds away! As mindless and nonsensical it might get, Akki makes sure he adds that dash of an attitude to all his lines. For example lines like “Boss ka Khoon bolta nhi khaulta hai, or jab yeh khaulta hai to yeh ek ek ko phodta hai” reminisces the typical Rowdy avatar that we have all loved watching Akshay in. But with Boss, he tried doing it with a little enhanced fervor which somehow was a welcome respite, given the film’s sloppy storyline. Although the film bombed, yeh mat bhulna that “The Boss is always right”!
Go Goa Gone
‘India mein bhoot voot hote hai, yeh zombies kaha se aa gaye?”- If this is what you were thinking, then Go Goa Gone was the perfect answer to all your queries! The film had too many comical dialogues but most of them had the cuss words predominating. But given today’s generation being so cool with their F words, Go Goa Gone was a totally cool refreshing youth film with dialogues that represented the language that most of us use in our daily life. With “Life Ka Simple Pleasure Hai No Smoking Zone Me Smoke Up Karna” being testimony to our bad vices and ‘Zakhm ek ladki ne diya hai, malham dusri ladki lagayegi’ encapsulating our romance fundas, this was a feel good Gen-Y film!
Aashiqui 2
In a film where actors probably hammed into each other’s lines and had no star value, it was only the witty lines written coupled with the soulful music and the emotions evoked which made Aashiqui 2 this huge blockbuster that it is today. Each line revamped and redefined romance, giving it a different dimension altogether. With lines like, “Dil ko zubaan, aankhon ko sapne mil gaye … aashiqui mein, zindagi ko mainne mil gaye” and “Yeh zindagi chal toh rahi thi … par tere aane se maine jeena shuru kiya”, Aashiqui 2 towered as the new age DDLJ, with a perfect heart ranching epilogue!
