Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Kajol-Shah Rukh, Amitabh-Rekha, Bollywood has had its fair share of on screen romances that have weaved magic on the audience. But with time, the industry has given way to newer couples that have created the stage on fire. While we still skip a heartbeat at watching ‘Suraj Hua Maddham’ playing on our desktop screens, we cannot deny that an unspoken ‘Ankahee‘ number also gives us goose bumps.

With 2013 ushering in as many as a score of new couples, some of which fizzled out but few of them sparkled with finesse. Now as the year comes to a closure, we pay a humble tribute to the few on screen couples, new and old, who made 2013 a wonderful year for us.

Ranbir Kapoor – Deepika Padukone (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani)

They were electrifying on screen when they were oh-so-into each other while filming Bachna Ae Haseeno. But when they decided to pair up post their break up, sparks flew and how! Ranbir and Deepika’s sizzling chemistry upheld the YJHD flag as the film became a memorabilia to new age romance. Ranbir’s Bunny was cool, Deepika as the nerdy Naina blew our minds! And when they coalesced their love for each other, what came across was an enticing and beautiful candy floss of a love story where Deepika-Ranbir’s pair scored over the story. We admit.

Aditya Roy Kapur - Shraddha Kapoor (Aashiqui 2)

They weren’t newcomers when they were paired together but they weren’t recognized as well. Not until their Aashiqui took us through the emotional wringer! A shabby frivolous plot which had nothing to offer, became the most romantic tale of the year as the power packed lovebirds Shraddha and Aditya scooped out their best romantic genes to make Aashiqui 2 a movie to be remembered. While Tum Hi Ho became the anthem of love, Shraddha-Aditya gained rapid recognition, courtesy their sparkling chemistry that ushered in a mammoth collection at the box office as well!

Ranveer Singh – Sonakshi Sinha (Lootera)

She had secretly admired Ranveer ever since he made his way to Bolly ville, total Band Baaja Baraat style. But when they actually came together, it was a movie that would be etched in our minds for the next few decades to come. A period romance, Lootera had Ranveer and Sonakshi brimming with tenderness as they let their coy side up and perfected the romantic saga like no other. The way the couple spoke a zillion words through their eye stares and myriad silences was commendable. By far the best performances from both the lead actors, Lootera had Ranveer-Sonakshi fall deeply in love on reel, which looked even more than just real. Emotional, poignant and heart warming, the story of Varun and Pakhi encapsulated the pangs and angst of love like no other.

Sonam Kapoor – Dhanush (Raanjhanaa)

The freshest pair of the year, director Anand Rai had a lot running on his shoulders as he decided to have a rather unconventional pairing for his un-forsaken love tale. Sonam and Dhanush melted like butter and cheese and what we were left with was a bright concoction of sheepish love mixed with the desire and wants to make the beloved happy. The ending was tragic and Raanjhanaa was the perfect tear jerker, much due to the brilliant camaraderie between the lead stars. Risque as it might be, Dhanush and Sonam pulled the film with elan, as both of them tasted super success with the audience appreciating their performances and celebrated their companionship.

Ranveer Singh – Deepika Padukone (Ramleela)

Ideally the boldest pair of the year, one that embodied love, passion and compassion like no other, Ranveer and Deepika were fire-n-fire together! Yes, unlike most other romances where opposites attract, here we saw two really gutsy individuals fall in love and the things that happen henceforth. Ranveer and Deepika’s intensity was a testament to the sizzling rawness that the two actors perfected their roles with. Based on the Bible of Romance, Ranveer mesmerized as the ballsy Ram while Deepika left everyone flabbergasted with her gutsy Leela. Much like a poetry in motion, the love smitten couple had the raw sexual urge portrayed wonderfully on screen. Anything short of timid, Ramleela worked only because Ranveer-Deepika scorched our screens as they infused life into the story with their underlying vigour and endearment! Hot, Hot and even more Hot!

Deepika Padukone – Shah Rukh Khan (Chennai Express)

The collision of the North meets South, the Om Shanti Om pair reinforced yearning for love in way, better than what they did in their first outing. From mouthing corny dialogues to the effective sing-and-you-guess-it sequences in the film, the Deepika-Shah Rukh duo kept us floored as they traversed and bridged the gap between Kashmir and Kanyakumari and let the Titli out of their love-lorn heart. Rahul and his Meenamma were made for each other and that showed with the kind of a crackling chemistry that the lead pair ensured on screen. As they proudly say, Love has no language and SRK and Dippy hammered the statement with powerful aplomb. Strikingly fetching, it would not be wrong to say that the Shah Rukh-Deepika pairing can definitely turn out to be the next SRK-Kajol for this generation and make the other run for their money.

Parineeti Chopra – Sushant Singh Rajput (Shuddh Desi Romance)

There were a host of reasons why Shuddh Desi Romance was hailed by critics. Besides Jaideep Sahani’s crackling writing, it was the impressive chemistry of Parineeti and Sushant which kept the film harbored strongly even in its weak moments. As emotionally feeble and impulsive young lovers, they were perfectly mismatched as two souls who love each other and still shirk commitment. Their chemistry left most giddy as they managed to perfectly resonate the thoughts of many. Amidst all the abandonment at the aisle, you do fall for the passion of Gayatri and Raghu who charm us with their irresistible goofiness.

Kareena Kapoor – Imran Khan (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein)

In the review of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, the one most convincing line was Imran Khan shouldn’t have any other co-star except Kareena Kapoor Khan. She brings out the best of his energy which he usually prefers concealing behind the garb of eyebrow-dancing. Somehow, the best and the only striking thing about Gori Tere Pyaar Mein was the smooth casting of its lead characters. Formulaic and sloppy, there can’t be any second thoughts about how endearing Imran and Kareena look together. May be Gori Tere Pyaar Mein was not as exhilarating as Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, but the chemistry of the duo still brims with the same freshness.
